At Cronulla Preschool, we use the Circle of Security (COS) to engage and support children, particularly in their social and emotional development. By understanding the genuine relationship needs behind children’s behaviour, we create a safe and nurturing environment for them to grow and learn.

We use language that reflects the principles of COS when we talk to children. For example, we might say, “Hi, I’m [your name], and I’m here to play with you and make sure you’re safe, just like [name another educator].”

When children have disagreements or get upset, we use COS principles to support them. We might say, “I can see you’re feeling [sad/angry], and that’s okay. I’m here to help you.” For example, if a child is upset because someone took the blocks they needed, we could say, “I understand you’re feeling angry about Peter taking the blocks you needed. Let’s talk to him together and find a solution.

“We also use COS principles to engage with children who might not know us very well. We might say, “I was watching you play, and I’m so glad you came to show me what you’re doing.” Or, “I’m here if you need me. I’ll be watching you play, and I’m ready to help you whenever you need it.”
